Tommy Oliver will forever be one of the most iconic Power Rangers in the history of the franchise, if not the most. A reason why Jason David Frank did not return for Power Rangers: Once & Always was never given, but the actor was likely focusing on other projects at the time. Before his death, Jason David Frank preferred not to participate in the Power Rangers reunion. Jason David Frank, who played Tommy Oliver in multiple Power Rangers shows, died on November 19, 2022. The Power Rangers reunion also gave the original Power Rangers a chance to grieve for their lost friend on-screen, making Power Rangers: Once & Always’s story bittersweet but meaningful. Once & Always gave Trini a legacy, Minh Kwan, who now uses the same Morpher and Power Coin as her mother. As such, the Power Rangers reunion could not offer closure for Tommy’s story as it did for Trini’s. It must be noted that Power Rangers: Once & Always was filmed before Jason David Frank passed away on November 2022. Power Rangers made the right choice by focusing its 30th-anniversary special on Trini. Once & Always established that Trini was alive until 2022, but that the original Yellow Ranger died fighting Robot Rita. The Power Rangers reunion was dedicated to Thuy Trang, offering an in-universe conclusion to Trini’s story. Power Rangers: Once & Always is the first time Power Rangers addressed what happened to Trini following Trang’s death. Trini’s actress, Thuy Trang, died on September 2003 after a car accident.
